JEE Main 2026 – Expected Cutoff Ranks for CSE (IITs, NITs & IIITs)

JEE Main 2026 – Expected Cutoff Ranks for CSE (IITs, NITs & IIITs)

1. IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology)

Admission to IITs’ Computer Science Engineering (CSE) is based on JEE
For top IIT CSE seats (IIT Bombay, Delhi, Madras), you typically need one of the highest ranks in JEE Advanced (often top few hundred).

Lower-tier/newer IITs (like IIT Jammu, Palakkad) may have closing ranks up to a few thousand, but competition is still very high.

Important: JEE Main rank alone doesn’t give direct admission to most IITs. You must first qualify JEE Advanced (top ~2,50,000 JEE Main candidates).

2. NITs (National Institutes of Technology)

Admissions to NITs are based on JEE Main All-India Rank (AIR).
Expected general category closing ranks
Expected Closing AIR (General)
NIT
NIT Trichy
~1,000 – 1,600
NIT Surathkal
~1,500 – 2,200
NIT Warangal
~2,000 – 2,800
NIT Rourkela
~3,500 – 4,500
MNNIT Allahabad
~4,500 – 5,500
Newer NITs (e.g., Srinagar, Agartala)
~25,000 – 35,000
👉 CSE at NITs is very competitive — top NITs often close well before the qualifying cutoff for JEE Main itself.

 3. IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology)

IIITs also use JEE Main rank (AIR) for admissions.

Expected closing ranks (General category CSE):

IIIT
Approx. Closing Rank (General)
IIIT Hyderabad
~1,000 – 3,000
IIIT Allahabad
~5,000 – 10,000
IIIT Delhi
~5,000 – 8,000
IIIT Bangalore (CSE)
~6,000 – 9,000
IIIT Gwalior
~7,000 – 9,500
Newer IIITs (Nagpur, Kota, Una, etc.)
~20,000 – 35,000
👉 Top IIITs like IIIT Hyderabad require very high ranks (often similar to NIT top cutoffs), while newer IIITs admit students with comparatively higher ranks (larger numbers).

General Notes on Cutoffs

The qualifying percentile for JEE Main 2026 (to be eligible for JoSAA counselling) is typically in the 93–95 range for the General category — this translates roughly to ranks up to 15,000–30,000 depending on difficulty and total candidates.

Branch popularity matters: CSE is usually the most competitive, so its closing ranks are much lower (better) than for many other branches.

Category and quota (Home State vs Other State) also significantly affect cutoffs — e.g., for OBC, EWS, SC/ST, the ranks can be much higher.

 Summary for Indian Students
If you want CSE (General Category):
Top IITs: Aim for JEE Advanced rank very close to top 100–500.
Good NITs (Trichy/Surathkal/Warangal): JEE Main AIR typically within ~1,000–3,000.

Competitive IIITs (Hyderabad/Allahabad/Delhi): Ranks often under ~10,000.

Newer/lower-tier IIITs or NITs: Ranks up to ~20,000–35,000 may sometimes secure seats.
